When in Rome...literally!

Photobucket

Ill spare you the laborious reading of my journal entries and just share some photos from our time in Rome. Buddy was most excited about this city. It really is a city stopped in time, yet modern at the same time. Its hard to describe just how beautifully old it is. Its like time hasn't touched it. The buildings are so old, the roads are cobblestone, and of course, ancient Rome, well, lets just say it was so fabulous I didn't want to leave. Ever.

Rome, through my eyes, in no particular order.

one of the 7 wonders of the world, that famous and absolutly mesmorizing colliseum. We spent more than 3 hours touring and trying to take it all in. My mind can hardly wrap itself around all that we learned and saw here. This was definatly a highlight of our trip. More on this in other posts!

The most remarkable experiance of my life was standing in the Sistene Chapel. It was so inspiring to see this original artwork by Michaelangelo. There used to be candles lit in the church, which over time, created quite a thick layer of soot over the ceiline. Now, there is quite some discprepancy, depending on who you ask, that a lot of of the authenticity of the ceiling was lost during the cleaning several years ago. But if you ask me, its stunning with or without soot. People couldnt beleive that it was so brilliantly colored once it was cleaned. If you look, you will notice that in many areas, it looks almost 3d. Its just the most remarkable thing I have ever seen. It was killing me that I couldnt take a photo, I saw many people trying, so I thought I would just point my camera up and try. All I really wanted was the creation of Adam in the center. If you notice, I only got Gods finger just barely touching Adams. Oh well, I cant beleive I even got one this good. I am so pleased. On the back wall of the chapel is the painting of the last judgement. Google it, you will be amazed. Honestly, we could have stayed and stared all afternoon. It was that wonderful. We didnt want to leave.

The Via dei Fori Imperiali is a road in the centre of the city of Rome that runs in a straight line from the Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum. Ancient Rome is excavated on both sides. In fact, they believe that there are, and most likely so, ancient remains under the road as well. Just behind this bldg is the Colliseum. I had to laugh beause the only rules to the road in Rome is that people agree, there are no rules. There are no street signs, lines, just a few lights. In fact, this photo is my fave because this intersection is CRAZY busy and the light is this man in the middle directing traffic on a pedestal. I couldnt beleive. It was so fun. I cant tell you how many times we had to cross the street with oncomming traffic. It was so fun.

Our hotel, the Relais Fontana Di Trevi was litterally across from the Trevi fountain. Our first night in Rome, We had a candle lit dessert on the rooftop restaurant overlooking the fountain and the hustle below. Rome comes ALIVE at night. It was the most magical thing, pardon the cliche. Just past the candle, on the right is the fountain and the square below. We loved this hotel so much ,that everytime we go to Rome (as if we go everyyear or something) we plan to stay here. The location was perfect. Walked to the spanish steps, Boboli gardens, ancient rome, etc. And our room. oh. my. gosh. perfectly cool on a hot night in Rome and absolutly a home away from home. They upgraded our room for free to a luxury suite when we checked in. Can I tell you again how awesome this was!! So cool.

Sidewalk menu. We ended up eating here. When they asked how many, they went inside, literally picked up a table and 2 chairs and set it up for us outside. It was fantastic. This is the night we were serenaded. I have a fun video I will share later. This was a delicious dinner with the best sidewalk atmosphere.
